6 questions

What exactly is Kava Moon?

A ready-to-drink, non-alcoholic kava drink: noble kava root extract in a 750 ml bottle, made by our family in Orlando, Florida. You pour it by the shot, 1.5 oz straight or mixed, with no alcohol in it.

There are two: Signature, with citrus, and Pure Canvas, unflavored, for mixing.

What does it taste like?

Kava itself is earthy and a little peppery. Signature brings citrus to the front and softens it; Pure Canvas keeps it plain, so the mixer leads.

In the first minutes your lips and tongue may tingle a little. That's normal, and a sign of real kava.

How many kavalactones are in it?

300 mg of kavalactones in every 1.5 oz pour, printed on the label, and about 17 pours in a bottle. Our latest independent test measured 296 mg per pour; the certificate is on our lab results page.

Is it really noble kava?

Yes. We use only noble kava root, never tudei, stems or leaves. The independent lab’s results show a kavain-first chemotype, 423165, the pattern of noble kava, and both certificates are on our lab results page so you can check for yourself.

What’s in it?

A few simple ingredients. Signature is pretty much kava and orange juice, plus a couple of preservatives to keep it fresh. Pure Canvas leaves out the orange juice.

Signature: kava root extract, orange juice, filtered water, vegetable glycerin, natural flavors, citric acid, potassium sorbate.
Pure Canvas: kava root extract, filtered water, vegetable glycerin, natural flavors, citric acid, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate.

No alcohol, no caffeine and no artificial sweeteners. Our kava is vegan, gluten-free, and made in the USA under strict quality standards.

How long does a bottle last?

The 750 ml bottle holds about 17 shots. If you have one most evenings, that's roughly two weeks. Once opened, refrigerate and finish within 30 days for the best flavor.

7 questions

What does it feel like?

Most people notice a calm, easy relaxation that settles in gently. You stay clear-headed and social, and the evening slows down. It doesn't feel like alcohol: no buzz, no blur, and no hangover the next morning.

There’s a minute-by-minute version on The Experience.

How long until I notice it, and how long does it last?

Most people notice it within 15 to 30 minutes, often with a light tingle on the tongue first. It lasts a couple of hours, depending on how much you poured and whether you'd eaten. Most people feel it more on an empty or light stomach.

Why didn’t I feel much the first time?

Some people notice very little the first time or two. That's common with kava, so give it another evening rather than a bigger pour. We wrote more about it in our reverse tolerance guide.

How much should I drink?

One 1.5 oz pour is a serving, with 300 mg of kavalactones, and most people find one is plenty. Follow the serving on the label. Most people notice it within 15 to 30 minutes; if you have a second, wait at least an hour, and stop at two in a night.

How do I drink it?

Shake the bottle first. Then pour 1.5 oz straight, chilled, as a shot, or over ice with about 4 oz of juice, coconut water or soda. The Experience has 18 recipes.

Can I drink it every day?

In moderation. Many people enjoy it a few evenings a week and take regular breaks. Heavy daily use is not recommended.

Will I get a hangover?

No. There’s no alcohol in it, so no hangover, no crash and no morning fog.

Is kava safe?

Pacific Island cultures have drunk kava for thousands of years. Ours is made from noble kava root only, and we send it to an independent lab and publish the results. Enjoy it responsibly: it's for adults 18 and over, don't mix it with alcohol, and don't drive after drinking it. Skip it if you're pregnant or nursing, and ask your doctor first if you have liver problems or take medication.

What about my liver?

Kava has been linked to rare cases of liver injury. Researchers never pinned down a single cause, but the likely culprits are bad extracts. Most of the cases, reported in Europe around 2000, involved concentrated kava supplement pills, often made with solvents such as acetone or ethanol, sometimes from poor-quality raw material, and most of the people affected were also taking other medicines or supplements.

Kava drunk the traditional way, as a water-based drink from noble kava root, has a much better record: a 2016 review for the FAO and the World Health Organization concluded it can be drunk with an acceptably low level of health risk. Kava Moon is made that way: noble kava root only, never stems or leaves, extracted with water alone, with no solvents, and measured to 1.5 oz a serving. We send it to an independent lab and publish the results.

None of that makes kava risk-free for everyone, so the warnings still matter: don't mix it with alcohol or acetaminophen (Tylenol), keep to the serving on the label, and if you have liver problems or take any medication, ask your doctor before drinking it.

Can I mix it with alcohol?

No. Both affect the liver, and together they can add to the strain on it and make impairment stronger. Kava Moon is made to replace a drink, not to go with one. Enjoy one or the other, not both.

Can I drive after drinking it?

No. Don't drive or operate machinery after drinking kava. It can slow your reactions, and in many states impaired-driving laws cover any substance that affects you, kava included.

Who shouldn’t drink kava?

Please skip it if you are:

  • under 18
  • pregnant or nursing
  • living with liver disease or liver problems
  • taking medication that affects the liver
  • taking anti-anxiety or sleep medication, or anything that makes you drowsy (kava can add to the effect)
  • drinking alcohol that day

When in doubt, ask your doctor first.
