Kava bars: what to expect on your first visit

A first visit to a kava bar, from ordering a shell to choosing a drink. Plus a local guide to kava bars in Delray Beach, Miami and West Palm Beach.

Three coconut-shell cups in a row, one filled with kava

I spent a lot of evenings, and a lot of money, at kava bars before my family started making Kava Moon. I still love having a place to meet friends over a shell. For a first visit, though, I'd pay more attention to the menu and the staff than to how many stars the place has.

A kava bar serves drinks made with kava, but it may serve other botanicals too. Our guide to kava drinks covers the ingredient and the main formats before you order.

Ask what's in your drink

Start with the ingredients. Does the drink contain only kava as its active botanical, or does it also have kratom, caffeine or something else? Kava and kratom are different plants, even when they appear on the same menu.

Then ask about the serving. A traditional shell, a concentrated shot and a tall mocktail can contain very different amounts. The size of the glass won't tell you the strength.

You can also ask to see the label or a lab report. A useful report identifies the sample and the tests performed. Our COA guide explains what that can tell you and what it can't.

Choose a bar that suits the evening

Check the venue's own website for its current menu, hours and events. Read a few recent reviews for details about the room: loud music or quiet tables, parking, accessible seating, a place to bring a laptop. A bar that's right for a Friday night group might be a poor choice for a quiet conversation.

You don't have to know the terminology before walking in. Tell the staff it's your first visit and ask them to explain the options. Plan your ride home before ordering, because you shouldn't drive after kava.

Kava bars around Orlando

These four venues give you a starting point in Orlando, Winter Park and Maitland. We checked their own websites on October 3, 2026. This is a local guide, not a list of Kava Moon stockists or a ranking based on visits.

  • SODO Kava, Orlando: 227 E Michigan Street, Unit B. Its website lists a mocktail menu and a separate Longwood location, so check which address you are visiting.
  • House of Mana, Orlando: 4401 S Orange Avenue, Suite 102. Its Orlando page describes a gaming lounge with arcade games, pool and community events.
  • Kava Cove, Winter Park: 2020 W Fairbanks Avenue, Suite 100. The family-owned lounge publishes its menu and event calendar online.
  • Elevate, Maitland: 400 N Orlando Avenue, Unit 109A. The menu includes kava and other botanical drinks; ask which botanical is in the drink you choose.

Follow the venue links for current hours and menus before travelling. Arrange a ride home and ask staff about ingredients and serving size. A business being listed here does not mean it carries our bottles.

Kava bars in Miami, Delray Beach and West Palm Beach

These South Florida locations are places to start your search. Check each bar's current information before travelling; menus, hours and event calendars change.

Miami

Kava Kavern on Biscayne Boulevard lists traditional shells, flavored drinks and weekend live music. To compare nearby places, browse KavaBarsGuide's kava bars in Miami, then check the venue's own pages.

Delray Beach

Zen Clarity Kava Lounge describes a space for meeting friends or working with a laptop, with games and evening events. Purple Lotus also has a Delray location. The directory of kava bars in Delray Beach gives you more options to compare.

West Palm Beach

Purple Lotus has a West Palm Beach location. Its own page is the place to check details before a visit. As with any bar serving several botanicals, ask about the ingredients in a specialty drink.

This South Florida section was adapted with permission from Daniel Benedetti of KavaBarsGuide. We checked the named venues' websites in October 2026.

Alcohol-free still needs some care

Kava can affect you even though it isn't alcohol. The NCCIH overview covers side effects and interactions. Follow the product's directions rather than keeping pace with another person's rounds.

Bring some of the evening home

The cost of regular bar visits was one reason I started looking for something to drink at home. I could manage traditional kava, but several shells in a row weren't enjoyable for me, and my friends found the taste hard to get past. My family eventually made the bottled kava we wanted to share.

We make Kava Moon in Orlando. Signature Citrus contains orange juice; Pure Canvas leaves it out. Both come in 750 mL bottles with multiple servings, so measure each pour. Our mocktail recipes offer mixer ideas, and our policies cover shipping.

For bar owners

If you're adding bottled kava to a menu, write down the serving size and the complete recipe so staff can make it consistently. Name the botanicals clearly and make the product information available to guests. Our wholesale page has Kava Moon ordering options through Airgoods or direct contact.

Pedro Luz, Co-Founder of Kava MoonPedro runs Kava Moon with his family in Orlando, Florida. The family makes its drinks with noble kava and publishes its independent laboratory reports.
