What is a kava drink?
A kava drink is made from the root of Piper methysticum, a plant with a long history of social and ceremonial use in the Pacific. Traditional kava is prepared with water. Modern drinks also come in cans, small shots and multi-serving bottles, with ingredients and serving sizes that vary by product.

Traditional root and powder
Ground root is kneaded or steeped in water and strained. Preparation takes some time, and the result depends on the root, quantity and method. Instant products have different preparation directions, so follow the package.

What does a kava drink taste like?
Kava has an earthy, peppery taste, sometimes with a little bitterness. Fruit, sparkling water and other mixers change the finished flavor, but an unflavored kava drink is not tasteless.
Signature Citrus uses orange juice to soften those earthy notes. Pure Canvas, also called Plain, has no orange juice. Its kava flavor remains, making it a base for your own mixers.
Some people notice a tongue tingle. Experiences vary; a sensation is not a test of a drink's quality or a reason to increase the serving.
For adults 18 and older. Do not combine kava with alcohol or drive after consuming it. Do not use while pregnant or nursing. Ask a doctor before use if you take medication or have liver problems. Follow all label warnings.
Read the serving, then the lab report
Bottle volume tells you how much liquid you are buying. The serving size and the stated kavalactones tell you how the maker portions that product.
We use water-extracted noble kava root and send our kava to an independent laboratory. We publish the reports so you can see the sample, date and tests performed. The reports are not currently matched to every production lot. Our guide to reading a certificate of analysis explains those limits.

How to drink bottled kava
Shake Kava Moon well and measure a 1.5 fl oz pour. Try Signature Citrus chilled, or add sparkling water and an orange slice. Pure Canvas works with juice, coconut water or another alcohol-free mixer. Follow the bottle's directions; adding a mixer changes the volume, not the amount of kava in the pour.
Our preparation and recipe collection gives exact ingredients for individual drinks. For a gathering, put out measured servings, mixers and an ordinary alcohol-free option for guests who do not want kava. Label the ingredients and keep kava separate from alcoholic drinks.

What is a kava drink made of?
Traditional kava is prepared from kava root and water. Packaged drinks can also contain juice, flavors, sweeteners or preservatives. Read the complete ingredient list on the product.
Is Kava Moon alcoholic?
Kava Moon is sold as a non-alcoholic kava drink. It is not made by removing alcohol from beer, wine or spirits. Do not combine it with alcohol.
How is bottled kava different from powder?
The extraction and bottling are already done. Shake the bottle and follow its measured serving directions. Traditional root powder needs preparation and straining; instant products have their own instructions.
Does Pure Canvas have a flavor?
Yes. Unflavored means no added orange juice flavor, not no taste. Pure Canvas retains kava's earthy, peppery character.
